If you or your child are having music tuition it is important to have a suitable instrument at home on which to practise between lessons.
There are many things to consider when choosing a piano or keyboard; acoustic versus digital, price, size etc.
Pianos and keyboards for those taking their first steps on their musical journey.
Pianos and keyboards for those taking graded music exams.
Pianos and keyboards for adult learners.
There are instruments available to suit every budget. Click below to see my suggestions and advice.
Having anything to practice on at home is better than having nothing when young beginners start their musical journey. So if committing to buying a full-size instrument is not practical right now, a basic electronic keyboard with full size keys will do to start with. Something like this 61 Key Electronic Keyboard Set with Headphones and Stand would be suitable.
A keyboard with weighted keys would be helpful, as this mimics the feel of a "real" piano (digital or acoustic). Something like this 88 Key Electronic Keyboard with Touch Sensitive Keys by Bryce Music would be suitable.
Andertons.co.uk have an excellent range of digital pianos and keyboards for beginners with a free delivery option available.
A digital piano is a good choice for beginners and has many features making it ideal for modern life:
Buying a second-hand digital piano is a great way to purchase an excellent quality instrument for less.

If you are preparing for a graded music exam (whether it is ABRSM, Trinity or LCM) you will need a full size instrument with weighted keys and sustain pedal.
Digital instruments are perfectly acceptable and are often cheaper than their acoustic equivalent. They also have many features making them ideal for modern life:

Acoustic pianos are larger than digital instruments and need to be in a room where the temperature doesn't fluctuate, as changes in humidity can affect tuning. Even with careful positioning, acoustic pianos will need regular tuning and general maintenance from time to time.

If you already play the violin you will almost certainly want to try out any instrument you are considering purchasing before making a decision.
But for those just starting out, buying online can be very convenient. However, the quality of instruments available varies enormously and it is important to avoid poor quality violins: they will hinder progress significantly.
Stentor is the leading manufacturer of high quality student violins, and is known for consistency and reliability. They make excellent violins for the beginner student and are recommended by teachers and educators due to their quality and value.
Violins come in different sizes to suit all age groups. Here is a general guide to sizing (measurements in cm are from student's neck to left wrist):
My recommendations:
Violinists also need something called "rosin" to rub onto the bow hair to help with the production of sound. I recommend D'Addario Natural Dark Rosin.
Violin strings do break occasionally, and the whole set can need replacing from time to time (depending on how much playing you do!). Again, these vary massively in quality and the cheapest option may not be the most economical as they are likely to break sooner.
I recommend Dominant strings for those in the first few years of playing. Make sure you buy the correct size for the violin!
